Two international banks have completed the inaugural live interbank transaction involving tokenized deposits on a blockchain-enabled platform developed by Swift. The milestone, announced on August 19, 2026, underscores growing progress toward seamless, round-the-clock cross-border payments using regulated bank-issued digital money.
Standard Chartered (LON: STAN) and HSBC (NYSE: HSBC) reported that they executed the first live cross-border transfer of this kind on Swift’s blockchain-based ledger.
This achievement demonstrates true interoperability between separate bank systems for tokenized deposits—digital representations of traditional bank deposits that can move more efficiently while remaining fully regulated.
The transaction follows Swift’s July 2026 declaration that its blockchain ledger was prepared for initial operational use.
At that time, 17 financial institutions spanning six continents indicated readiness to conduct pilot live transactions with tokenized deposits.
These pilots aim to enable continuous payment availability and improved liquidity management.
The recent exchange between HSBC and Standard Chartered marks the first actual interbank operation performed on the new ledger.
In practical terms, the banks exchanged payment messages via the Swift platform.
The resulting obligations were then recorded as tokenized deposit claims on each institution’s proprietary systems: HSBC utilized its Tokenised Deposit Service, while Standard Chartered employed its own tokenized deposit infrastructure.
Swift’s ledger functioned as a secure coordination layer, matching and netting the obligations between the parties before final settlement occurred through conventional banking channels.
This approach preserves the existing regulatory framework and operational safeguards of traditional finance while introducing the speed and efficiency benefits of distributed ledger technology.
