FIS Embeds Spade’s Real-Time Transaction Enrichment Across Its Debit Platform

FIS (NYSE: FIS) has embedded Spade’s real-time merchant enrichment tools into its debit processing stack, giving issuing banks and credit unions cleaner merchant identities at the moment a transaction is processed.

The move is aimed at statements that actually look familiar to cardholders, fewer avoidable disputes, and stronger data for authorization and analytics.

Vague merchant descriptors have long been a quiet source of friction.

A purchase that shows up as an obscure string instead of a recognizable store name often leads customers to question the charge and contact their issuer first.

That extra traffic raises operational costs and can weaken the quality of data used to approve or decline later transactions.

Spade’s system matches incoming transaction details to verified business records and returns a clearer merchant name, location information, and related context so those labels can appear in a form people recognize.

FIS says Spade’s underlying directory covers 99.9 percent of businesses in the United States and Canada.

The partnership is not limited to prettier statements. Issuers on the FIS debit platform can now use the same enriched merchant profile when deciding whether to authorize a purchase, when investigating disputes, and when building personalized experiences or feeding analytics and AI models.

In other words, the same identity that appears on a monthly statement can also inform risk scoring and product design.

Industry coverage notes the capability is available to more than 2,500 issuers representing more than 160 million debit cards on FIS infrastructure.

FIS framed the work as part of a wider effort to put better data inside issuing systems rather than treating enrichment as an afterthought.

Kim Bynan, head of issuing solutions at FIS, said customers need records they can follow and institutions need data they can trust.

Spade co-founder and CEO Oban MacTavish argued that a modern payments experience starts with knowing exactly where a transaction originated, and that placing that data inside a major issuing platform raises the bar for transparency.

The practical bet is straightforward.

If cardholders can identify a merchant at a glance, they are less likely to open a dispute that should never have been filed.

If issuers see a consistent merchant identity in real time, they may make better authorization calls and give downstream systems cleaner inputs.

As payment flows grow more fragmented—across processors, marketplaces, and third-party facilitators—raw network strings often fail to name the business a customer actually dealt with.

Enrichment tries to close that gap without slowing the authorization path.

The integration is live now for FIS debit issuing clients.

Pricing has not been disclosed publicly. Whether or not dispute volumes and authorization performance actually improve will depend on how fully institutions surface the enriched fields on statements, in apps, and in risk engines.

Still, the announcement marks a notable step: a large processor treating merchant identity as infrastructure rather than a cosmetic statement feature.
