BlackRock Outlines How Tokenization Could Transform Investment Portfolios

BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) has described tokenization as a new distribution channel for professionally built investment strategies, not merely a way to place individual funds or equities on a blockchain. The comment came as Ondo Finance launched Ondo Intelligent Portfolios, a product category in which a curated allocation is delivered as one transferable on-chain token.

Three of the opening tokens rest on portfolio strategies that BlackRock developed for Ondo.

They are Ondo High Income Powered by BlackRock (BLKHIon), Ondo Diversified Growth Powered by BlackRock (BLKDIGon), and Ondo High Growth Powered by BlackRock (BLKGRWon).

Eligible investors outside the United States, in permitted jurisdictions, mint or redeem a single token that provides economic exposure to a weighted basket.

They do not buy, weight, or rebalance the underlying positions themselves. Holdings, target weights, and each rebalance are visible on-chain.

The tokens can move peer-to-peer across wallets, exchanges, and decentralized-finance applications.

Lisa O’Connor, global head of BlackRock’s Model Portfolio Solutions team and co-chief investment officer for Global Solutions in the firm’s Multi-Asset Strategies group, said tokenization creates new ways for portfolio strategies to be delivered through digital infrastructure.

Diversified strategies can be incorporated into tokenized products so eligible investors reach an allocation through one instrument, she said, showing how established portfolio construction methods can travel through new channels and technologies.

Ondo’s account of the launch stresses capabilities that conventional brokerage and fund wrappers do not routinely offer in the same form.

Rebalancing can execute automatically at the smart-contract level.

The portfolio token is programmable and can be composed with other on-chain activity.

Different asset classes can sit inside one token.

Ian De Bode, Ondo’s acting chief executive and president, said portfolios of this kind had not previously been available on-chain, and that the tokens are transferable at any time and usable across decentralized finance.

Ondo issues the tokens through Ondo Global Markets and handles tokenization; it has said it intends to add further on-chain portfolios over time.

BlackRock’s role, as described around the launch, is that of a model provider: it supplies the strategy developed for Ondo.

It does not issue the tokens, manage the on-chain portfolios, or take on a direct relationship with token holders.

That separation matters for how the product should be described.

Tokenization of stocks has become a visible market theme, but it is not the same thing as a digital security, and the two labels should not be used interchangeably.

Last month that distinction surfaced in a public dispute between Robinhood chief executive Vlad Tenev and AMC Entertainment chief executive Adam Aron over tokens linked to AMC shares.

Aron treated the products as a synthetic or parallel market that could affect capital raising and shareholder rights, and he raised the prospect of regulatory and legal action.

Tenev argued that a public issuer does not control every instrument that references its shares, and characterized Robinhood’s tokens as debt securities backed one-for-one by collateral.

That argument was about the legal form, consent, and rights attached to equity-linked tokens.

The BlackRock–Ondo portfolios are a different construction.

They package multi-asset strategies as tokens that track baskets implemented by Ondo, rather than standing in for an issuer’s own shares.

Recording an interest on a blockchain, or wrapping a strategy so it can move between wallets, does not by itself turn the instrument into a digital security.

Collapsing those terms misses the point of both the portfolio launch and the earlier equity-token debate: what the holder actually owns depends on the legal structure, the backing, and the rights written into the product, not on the fact that a token exists.
