Revolut Mexico Rolls Out Digital Payroll Portability, Will Compete with Nubank and Other Digital Banks for Local Market Share

Revolut Mexico has begun introducing payroll portability, a feature that enables customers to redirect their salary deposits to the digital bank and treat it as their primary account. The UK-headquartered Fintech firm, which secured a full local banking license and launched operations earlier in 2026, is rolling out the capability in phases.

This development has been revealed as Revolut continues to compete with other Fintech challengers such as Nubank, other digital banks, as well as more resourceful incumbents serving Mexican and the larger LatAm markets.

An initial test cohort is receiving access so the company can gather feedback and refine the experience before expanding it to its broader Mexican user base of more than one million customers over the following weeks.

The service addresses a long-standing practical constraint in Mexican employment banking.

For decades, many workers have received their pay only in the institution selected by their employer.

While legal rules have long permitted employees to request a switch, the process often involved paperwork, branch visits, and administrative friction that discouraged widespread adoption.

Revolut’s approach removes those hurdles by handling the request entirely inside its mobile application.

Users initiate the change in the “Account Details” section of the app.

They supply either their 18-digit CLABE (the standardized interbank key) or the relevant debit card information from the account currently receiving the salary.

The transfer is then managed digitally through Revolut’s direct connection to the SPEI interbank payment system.

The company states that the entire process is completed within two to ten business days, without any requirement for physical documents or in-person visits.

As an alternative, employees may also ask their employers to deposit wages straight into the Revolut account when that option is available.

Juan Miguel Guerra, general director of Revolut Mexico, has framed the launch as a meaningful improvement in user choice.

He has noted that while portability rules already existed, many people previously judged the effort insufficient relative to the benefit; the new in-app path, he has said, lets customers complete the switch with a couple of taps and then access a polished interface, strong security controls, more attractive savings returns, and daily rewards.

By capturing recurring salary inflows, the bank aims to move from a secondary spending or travel tool to a core financial relationship for its customers.

The capability rests on Revolut’s status as a fully licensed multiple-banking institution in Mexico and its technical integration with the national payments infrastructure.

Under existing rules set by the Bank of Mexico, the institution that first receives the funds must forward them to the employee’s chosen bank at no cost, and the change must take effect by the tenth business day after the request.

Revolut’s digital channel simply streamlines the customer-facing side of that regulated process.

For a bank that has grown rapidly since its early-2026 launch and already offers multi-currency accounts, competitive savings rates, and other digital products, payroll portability represents a logical next step in deepening engagement.

It also intensifies competition with traditional Mexican banks that have long dominated salary-account relationships.

As the test phase concludes and broader availability arrives, the feature is expected to give more of Revolut’s Mexican customers a practical way to consolidate their primary income and everyday banking in a single digital account.
