Girl Jumps Off House, Breaks Feet, Crowdfunds Recovery, Gets Jeered

feet6n-3-webToday in should have seen that coming: An 18 year old girl named Nicole moved into a house with a handful of her friends after graduating high school. One day everyone decided to do what young people do and jump off the roof and into the pool. Nicole jumped off the roof and didn’t make the pool. Instead she broke both feet after hitting the concrete. She’ll be in a wheelchair for at least 6 months, leaving her without the ability to work or pay her new bills.

The entire incident was caught on video. If you want to watch it click here. I don’t.

Here’s the kicker: Nicole’s Mom Carrie Yunker has launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to pay for some of her daughter’s bills and living expenses while she recovers. She’s seeking $4,200.

The Internet is not amused. The story has appeared in Gawker, The Daily Mail, and the New York Daily News among others.

Here are a handful of comments from around the web…

I have a friend who went to law school and decided never to practice law. So she’s using GoFund (or Kickstarter, can’t remember) to pay off her massive school loans. When the f$^# did it become acceptable to ask other people to pay for your stupid mistakes?

Well, now the world knows who gave Nicole Easton her excellent sense of judgment.

gofundme.com should be called BEGGING.com

why should anyone give this dope money??? She’s the victim of her own stupidity. She made the bed, let her lie in it

Does this cross the line of acceptable use when it comes to crowdfunding? Of course not, but it does highlight the reality of raising money online. It’s public, it’s there for the world to see and the Internet is full of opinions. Always consider this before launching a campaign.
