OurCrowd Launches Fund Open to Canadian Investors

OurCrowd, a top global investment crowdfunding platform, has announced the availability of a fund that is open to individual investors in Canada. OurCrowd’s OC50, a portfolio index fund, is said to be available with “unprecedented low minimum contributions” opening up the world of VC investing for Canadians.

OurCrowd, based in Israel, has over $1.5 billion in committed capital and more than 220 portfolio companies. Over the past years, OurCrowd has delivered multiple high-profile exits for its investors including well-known names like Beyond Meat and Lemonade. Both these companies rocketed higher once listed on a public exchange.

OurCrowd Vice President, Investor Relations David Shore said they are democratizing access to the critical venture capital asset class.

“The kind of investments that used to be reserved exclusively for billionaires and well connected financial institutions, are now available to all accredited Canadian investors through the OC 50 Fund. Additionally, because we want Canadians to be able to maximize the full long-term value of this investment, we have structured the Fund to ensure it is RRSP and TFSA eligible.”

OurCrowd points to the fact that promising young firms are striving to stay private for as long as possible. This means once a firm decides to go public much of the gains have been hoovered up by big money. OurCrowd seeks to provide access to an asset class and a highly diversified fund may provide solid returns for investors.

Jon Medved, OurCrowd founder and CEO says his company is changing the way the VC game is played:

“For the first time, individual accredited investors can invest small amounts in a private venture fund that counted as two of its recent investments among the top performing IPO’s of 2019 and 2020, Beyond Meat and Lemonade.”

OurCrowd’s OC50 was created as a diversified investment vehicle to break open the gates and offer more investors access to vetted startups across a variety of sectors, stages, and geographies. The OC50 includes early stage firms in areas such as healthcare technology, transportation, agriculture, communication, enterprise, robotics, and AI.

OurCrowd reports that the original OC50 Series I, launched in 2017, saw six firms exit generating on average 2.3 times gross return on invested capital (as of Q3 2020).
