Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management Acquires Stake in Visa

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman has directed substantial capital from his Pershing Square Capital Management toward a key player in the digital payments sector. Recent regulatory disclosures reveal that the firm established a significant new holding in Visa Inc. (NYSE:V), acquiring roughly 3.27 million shares valued at approximately $1.12 billion as of the end of June 2026.

This position represents about 5.4% to 5.76% of the portfolio and ranks among the fund’s more prominent investments, trailing only core holdings such as Uber, Brookfield, Microsoft, and Amazon.

The move forms part of a broader allocation into financial infrastructure during the second quarter.

Pershing Square simultaneously initiated a position in Mastercard involving around 2.12 million shares worth roughly $1.09 billion (about 5.3% of the portfolio) and added exposure to S&P Global valued near $1.06 billion.

Together, these three new stakes channel more than $3 billion into payments networks and financial data providers.

Ackman’s firm is known for concentrated, long-term bets on high-quality businesses.

The simultaneous entry into Visa and Mastercard signals confidence in the enduring role of established payment networks.

In shareholder communications, the team described these companies as capital-light “toll-takers” that collect fees on transactions with limited balance-sheet risk, while benefiting from inflation and the continued shift toward electronic payments.

Value-added services—such as fraud prevention, analytics, and consulting—have grown rapidly and now account for a meaningful share of revenues at both firms, providing an additional growth engine beyond core transaction volumes.

Visa’s recent operational results align with this thesis. In its fiscal third-quarter 2026 report, the company posted strong double-digit growth in net revenue and payments volume, with cross-border activity and US spending remaining robust.

Management highlighted expansion into new areas, including partnerships supporting AI-driven or “agentic” commerce and infrastructure related to stablecoins, positioning the network to participate in evolving forms of digital transactions.

These purchases occurred against a backdrop of market volatility in which many non-AI-focused large-cap stocks lagged broader indices.

Ackman has characterized the environment as creating attractive entry points for businesses the firm had monitored for years.

The new positions join an existing concentrated portfolio that includes technology and consumer names, reflecting a preference for dominant franchises with durable competitive advantages and predictable cash generation.

For a manager who typically maintains a relatively small number of high-conviction ideas, the scale of the Visa commitment—and the parallel investments in related financial infrastructure—underscores a deliberate strategic emphasis on the payments ecosystem.

Market observers will watch how these holdings perform as digital commerce continues to expand and as any regulatory or technological shifts play out. The disclosures come via standard quarterly 13F filings covering holdings as of late June 2026, with additional context provided in the firm’s semi-annual shareholder materials.
