Interactive Brokers Adds Ethereum (ETH) Staking, Extending Digital Assets Yield Opportunities within Traditional Brokerage Accounts

Interactive Brokers (Nasdaq: IBKR) introduced cryptocurrency staking for eligible clients, allowing them to generate rewards on certain digital assets while holding those positions alongside equities, options, futures, and other instruments on its single platform.

The service is delivered by infrastructure partner zerohash. At the outset, clients of Interactive Brokers LLC can stake Ethereum via a dedicated Staking Dashboard in the Client Portal, where they may request to stake or unstake and track the status of those actions.

Any rewards earned are then added to the staked balance as additional cryptocurrency and are able to compound for as long as the assets remain staked.

Chief Executive Officer Milan Galik drew a parallel to the firm’s existing Stock Yield Enhancement Program, which lets clients earn extra income on shares they already own.

In the same spirit, staking offers a way for clients to earn on cryptocurrency holdings they already keep at the broker. “We want clients to earn more from the assets they hold,” he stated.

The move expands Interactive Brokers’ already broad digital-asset capabilities.

Clients can trade roughly twenty cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Chainlink, and others—at commissions that begin as low as 0.12 percent to 0.18 percent of trade value, with a $1.75 minimum and without spreads, markups, or separate custody charges.

The platform also supports funding and transfers using stablecoins such as USDC, RLUSD, and PYUSD, plus the ability to move supported assets to and from both custodial and self-custody wallets.

Everything sits inside one multi-asset interface that also covers stocks, bonds, futures, and prediction markets.

This development fits a wider pattern in which regulated intermediaries are layering yield features onto crypto holdings.

Robinhood, for example, enables staking of Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano for eligible US clients, typically retaining a percentage of rewards while handling validator operations on behalf of users.

Swissquote, a regulated Swiss bank and broker, lets clients stake Ethereum, Polkadot, Solana, and Cardano directly from its platform, charging about 20 percent of rewards and publishing indicative rates that vary with network conditions.

On the institutional side, Coinbase Prime has expanded staking partnerships that allow clients to stake across multiple proof-of-stake networks without removing assets from custody.

Certain exchange-traded products, including some Fidelity Ethereum and Solana funds, have also incorporated staking of underlying holdings so that a portion of network rewards accrues to the fund.

Banks such as Switzerland’s PostFinance have likewise offered Ethereum staking to retail clients through specialized partners.

For the digital-assets sector, the Interactive Brokers launch is notable because it brings a familiar income-generating concept—comparable to securities lending—into a conventional brokerage environment used by millions of active investors and institutions.

By keeping crypto and traditional assets under one roof and adding the possibility of protocol-driven rewards, the firm lowers friction for clients who prefer not to move assets to specialized crypto platforms.

The arrangement also underscores growing competition among multi-asset brokers to offer more than simple spot trading.

As more established intermediaries add staking, stablecoin rails, and transfer options, digital assets become more practical for portfolio allocation and long-term holding.

That integration can support broader participation while subjecting the activity to existing compliance and risk-management frameworks.

Rewards remain variable and subject to network conditions, validator performance, unbonding delays, and potential slashing risks, and crypto holdings themselves fall outside traditional SIPC protections.

Availability continues to depend on the specific Interactive Brokers entity and the client’s country of residence. Nonetheless, the step illustrates how traditional market infrastructure is steadily absorbing core crypto functions, potentially accelerating institutional and retail comfort with yield-bearing digital assets.
