Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEX) has launched a joint index with S&P Dow Jones Indices combining Hong Kong-listed technology companies with large-cap US stocks, according to an announcent.
The index offers investors exposure to both markets through a single benchmark.
The S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index allocates approximately 60% of its weighting to the HKEX Tech 100 Index and 40% to the S&P 500, with quarterly rebalancing, HKEX said in a statement.
The index was launched on Sept. 30, 2026.
The benchmark brings together technology and innovation-driven companies listed in Hong Kong and leading US-listed businesses, allowing investors to diversify across markets, sectors, and sources of growth.
HKEX said the index is designed to support the eligibility of exchange-traded funds tracking the benchmark for potential inclusion in Southbound Stock Connect, which facilitates mainland Chinese investment in Hong Kong-listed securities.
The index is also intended to support cross-market capital flows and portfolio diversification.
“By bringing these complementary exposures together in a single benchmark, we are creating new pathways for investors to access opportunities across markets,” Gregory Yu, HKEX’s head of markets, said.
Robert Ross, chief commercial officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said the benchmark combines Hong Kong’s technology sector with leading US large-cap companies through a transparent, rules-based framework.
The HKEX Tech 100 Index, launched in December 2025, tracks 100 of the largest Hong Kong-listed companies with significant exposure to six technology themes: artificial intelligence, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles and smart driving, information technology, the internet, and robotics.
The S&P 500, meanwhile, comprises 500 leading US companies and covers about 85% of available US stock market capitalisation.
As of the end of 2025, approximately $23 trillion was indexed or benchmarked to the S&P 500, including about $16 trillion in passively managed assets, according to HKEX.
The new index expands HKEX’s range of benchmarks as the exchange seeks to develop products that connect investors with opportunities across international markets.
HKEX is one of the world’s major exchange groups, offering equity, derivatives, commodities and fixed-income products, as well as operating the London Metal Exchange.
Its Connect programmes facilitate cross-border investment between mainland China, Hong Kong and international markets.
