Small Businesses Are Turning to Crowdfunding Sites Like CircleUp

CircleUpNoha Waibsnaider is savoring success: sales at her eight-year-old Gowanus-based food company, Peeled Snacks, doubled last year.

Her kid-friendly, organic dried fruit snacks, already carried at Starbucks, Whole Foods and Fairway, are now heading to groceries nationwide.

But when Waibsnaider thought about raising money to fund her expansion, she knew private equity and venture capital firms wouldn’t bite.

“They won’t come on board until you have $15 million to $20 million in sales,” she said.

“It’s very different from a tech company where they will invest in a 19-year-old with an idea. That doesn’t exist in the food and beverage space.”

Enter CircleUp, a crowdfunding platform that matches consumer products and retail companies with accredited investors.
