Crowdfunding Campaign to Bring Ronaldo Home to Manchester United Shuts Down

Ronaldo Scores first GoalSites Negative Media as Reason Campaign is Cancelled.

In an effort to bring the world renowned football star back to Manchester the crowdfunding campaign to “Bring Ronaldo Home” has now come to a close.  The imaginative initiative put together by determined lovers of the sports and dedicated Man U fans closed this weekend as their site posted notice and told contributors all donated funds would be returned in full.

It was all started by Australian based Manchester United supporter Lee Clough, who created the concept in mid April and formed a company to launch the campaign.  He noted that Ronaldo had stated he wanted to return and Sir Alex Ferguson (team manager who has since announced his retirement) had said he wanted him back as well.  The campaign was not supported by the Manchester United team.

The amount deemed necessary to pay for such a move was an incredible sum and the crowdfunding campaign was beyond a long shot from the beginning.  An estimated £50 to £80 million was thought to be the total required –  that along with  an August 31st deadline made the goal in need of a miracle.

The posting on the web site noted another justification for closing down the campaign.  There was an insinuation the crowdfunding for Ronaldo was a scam:

“Just as the campaign was gaining traction and encouraging media interest from around the globe (early pledges came from 52 countries) the campaign was damaged by a vicious and slanderous campaign.  A UK based freelance journalist decided our website “must be a scam”.  Despite our repeated efforts to persuade this journalist otherwise she proceeded, amongst other activities, to make libelous statements on social media and in telephone conversations with other journalists – resulting in negative media publicity.

As a direct consequence of the libel, Equius has now found it impossible to continue.”

The posting on the domain ended by thanking all of the fans who contributed to the crowdfunding effort and believed in the spirit of the campaign.
