Axed Australian Climate Council Goes Nonprofit, Crowdfunds For Climate Research

Australia’s Climate Council was the victim of what some may see as austere budget cuts recently when prime minister Tony Abbott decided to shutter the agency. Professor Tim Flannery, formerly at the agency’s helm, had been displaced.

However, Flannery wasn’t content to rest on his laurels. Instead, he and his associates turned to the crowd to seek funds in order to bring the Climate Council back as an apolitical & independent nonprofit. Now the campaign to self-fund has raised over $1 million AU, and the funds will ensure that the newly-independent Climate Council can continue to operate in the near term.

Flannery recently took to YouTube to thank those who pledged during the campaign…

The Climate Council raised funds via a standalone fundraising page, accepting pledges via Paypal or American Express.
