Panono Crowdfunds Over $1.25 Million on Indiegogo

5th Most Funded Successful Campaign Ever on Indiegogo.

PanonoBerlin, Germany based Panono has won many accolades during their crowdfunding campaign including a coolest gadget shout out and tons of press especially with their trip to CES 2014 this past week.  The hot tech device that allows you to take a 360 degree “selfie” closed their crowdfunding campaign last night having raised $1,250,028 on Indiegogo on a big goal of $900,000.  The amount raised places their campaign in 5th place for the largest successful crowdfunding campaign ever on the Indiegogo platform.  Over 2600 people backed the campaign.

The Panono allows you to take  a picture of everything in every direction at a high resolution and capture the moment for perpituity.  Think of a panoramic picture but one where you can look around in all directions.   A user may toss it in the air or position it on a poll (or just hold it of course) to shoot an image.  When you toss it up the accelerometer determines when the ball is at the highest point and shoots the picture.  The image is previewed on your smartphone app (Android / iOS) pushed to the cloud for stitching and then you may share it everywhere.

Panono Founders Qian Qin Jonas Pfeil Björn BollensdorffThe company was founded by Jonas Pfeil while working on his masters degree in computer engineering at the Technical University of Berlin.  Jonas thought it could be easier to create a spherical image instead having to manually stitch images.   The project became part of his thesis as he considered using a ball thrown in the air which led to the first prototype his “Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera” which he revealed at the SIGGRAPH Asia conference in 2011.  In 2012 along with his two co-founders and former classmates in Berlin, Björn Bollensdorff and Qian Qin – the company was formed.

Jump forward to 2014 and with funds raised via Indiegogo the pretail campaign is set to ship their first run of Panono’s this coming September.  Anyone who missed the campaign may be able to pre-order the device soon on the Panono web site.

Once the celebrations are over for the Panono team after what must have been a crazy week we would expect to see more announcements for this small company.  I predict the Panono will become a common guest at every party, special event and gathering worth remembering by the end of 2014.
