A Saskatoon man weighing about 600 pounds has a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe launched in his name. The campaign is seeking $30,000 to fund a weight loss surgery that he says could save his life.
In an interview with Metronews.ca, 21 year old Luke Deitner explained the stakes. “For so long now, it seems the world has just spun around me, and I’ve just stayed in one spot — and I don’t want that to happen,” he said. ““I want to be part of this world.”
Luke was rejected by Edmonton Clinic, who said he would have to lose 300 pounds in order to be eligible for surgery. He ended up reaching out to Tess Boehm, another Saskatonian who had her own struggles with weight loss. She was profiled in CBC.ca after losing 200 pounds herself.
Luke may need two surgeries to get him back down to a healthy weight, and if Saskatchewan Health doesn’t approve the action plan he may be headed to Brazil for surgery. This GoFundMe campaign won’t cover all of the expenses, but there are hopes that it will provide a good first step for Luke in his journey forward.
