Heartwood Center in Evanston Leads the Way in Neighborhood Revitalization After Kickstarter Success

Curt's Cafe 3

Heartwood Center for Body Mind Spirit, a holistic health services center in Evanston, Illinois, is at the forefront of the Dempster/Dodge neighborhood revitalization. From the successful Curt’s Café crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to the purchase of three nearby properties, Heartwood has positioned itself at the core of these community ventures.

Heartwood 1In the past few months, Heartwood has purchased and beautified the parking lot located at 1808/1810 Dempster Street and the adjacent building at 1809 Dempster Street. The parking lot was acquired for much needed parking availability, and the building will be used for more office space. Heartwood plans to improve its exterior as well. Heartwood Center has also assisted their affiliate not-for-profit organization, Tsogyaling Meditation Center, in purchasing the house next door to Heartwood at 1814 Dempster Street. The house will be used for Tsogyaling programs and to accommodate visiting teachers. They will also run social service programming and meditation classes out of the space. With the purchase of these properties, along with the most recent Tsogyaling purchase, the community is visibly becoming more vibrant and beautiful.

Heartwood Center was instrumental in helping to close the deal for Curt’s Café to take over the former Perla Café space on 1813 Dempster Street. At their recent fundraiser, on November 1st, Executive Director Susan Trishman gave heartfelt thanks to Nancy Floy, founder of Heartwood Center, Kirsten Hemingway and the Heartwood Center itself for raising $50,000 in its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter this past summer. The former owners of Perla Café are very happy with the transition. Renovations are currently being made in the existing space, with a planned launch of January 1, 2015.

Curt's Cafe 2While Heartwood is spearheading the revitalization, other businesses in the community have joined their pursuit. A Starbucks at Dempster/Dodge has opened, and a new grocery store, Valli Products, is set to open by June 1, 2015. The local business association, of which Nancy Floy is serving as President, is also establishing a greater presence through new community initiatives and benefits for businesses and their consumers. They are prepared to launch a new brand identity and an improved digital presence before 2015. Nancy Floy herself is also working with a local group of investors for further revitalizations.

Heartwood remains at the forefront of the latest community enhancements, and the business itself is bringing in more internationally known teachers for their upcoming workshops in their beautiful and recently renovated event space, the Skylight Room. Throughout the month of November, Heartwood is featuring a new workshop every weekend. They are welcoming renowned Qi Gong instructor, Sifu Pragata Blaise, meditation instructor Lopon Helen Berliner, and Preston Klik for his dynamic Gong-Bowl Sound Meditation.

Heartwood is a holistic health services center committed to providing excellence in care to Evanston and the greater Chicagoland area. It features newly renovated offices for integrative healthcare practitioners, a classroom for teachers, an event space, and a conference room.
