On Tuesday (February 17th), Los Angeles-based Beam Labs launched a Kickstarter campaign with a goal to raise $200,000 for its new self-titled projector.
According to its description, the Beam is a small project that assists you in daily activities and is controlled with any smartphone and tablet. It can turn any flat surface into a big screen and it is a powerful device that is equipped with a smart computer.
The Beam’s team stated, “You can play games, watch movies or share content from your smartphone or tablet. Beam will assist you in your daily activities, like wake you up in the morning with the latest news and your agenda or show you your social updates when you come home.”
Beam is notably easy to set up and control with the Apple and Android app. Users just simply screw it into any light socket or use the included power cable to place it on any flat surface. The team noted, “With Beam, we created an easy to use internet of things device that can entertain and assist you throughout the day, perfectly integrated in your home. The technology inside Beam is so unique that we decided to patent it. Patent Pending!”
Explaining Beam’s design, the team shared, “Nowadays technology is pushing itself into every corner of our lives, mostly trying to make things better. But that doesn’t mean our house should look like a Borg cube. Instead we took great care to create a designed object that can earn its own space in every room, without being noticed on a first glance. Our team designed a product with a modern minimalistic look. It feels like a modern lamp, but when you look closer you notice there is more to this lamp than you thought.”
Some examples of how you can use Beam include:
- Watch TV on the ceiling
- Play games using your phone or Bluetooth controller
- Project recipes on your kitchen counter
- Stream content from your network drive
- Listen to music through its speakers
Due to Beam running on Android, users can use any app that’s available at the Google Play Store.
Since its debut on the crowdfunding platform, Beam has surpassed its initial goal and has so far captured nearly $275,000 from over 750 backers. It is set to close on March 24th.
