NYCTA Graphics Standards Manual Arrives, Worth the Wait

The 1970 NYC Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual, by Unimark’s Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda, was kickstarted by Pentagram designers Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth and dedicated to Massimo Vignelli, Bob Noorda, and the Unimark staff, new york city transit authorityreissued in the early months of 2015 as a full-size book. Licensed exclusively from the MTA and available only through Kickstarter, the NYC MTA Graphics Standards Manual will not again be printed or available anywhere else.  The smart Kickstarter campaign swiftly raised over $802,8124 with the help 6,718 backers to bring this exquisite project to life.

Since the successful campaign, the legendary graphic designer Massimo Vignelli passed away; Bob Noorda predeceased him in 2010.  In the crowdfunding world of records, the NYCTA Graphics Manual now stands as the most funded graphics design project on the Kickstarter platform.

Full disclosure: I backed this project.  The months passed and I almost forgot about its arrival.  Then, when I saw a huge package outside my door just as I left for vacation, I remembered.  I waited until I returned from vacation to open the hulking package and tome, waiting for a quiet moment to savor its design perfection and flood of returning city memories…it was worth the wait.
