No book teetering on your head as you slowly walk down the hallway, arms outstretched as if you were on a tightrope: BetterBack, a posture-improving product now overfunding on Kickstarter, says that wearing the company’s device just 15 minutes a day can retrain your default posture.
Not only is good posture a highly attractive quality for potential romantic interests (as are many aspects of self-care), it helps prevent issues such as back pain and sciatica pain that can become the bane of your average email-reading, report-typing, story-writing employee. One option is certainly a standing desk (my vote), but if sitting is your preferred posture, then maintaining your body in alignment is key.
Enter BetterBack. This Kickstarter Staff Pick already has $886,238 pledged of its $12,500 goal, with six days remaining and 12,328 backers so far. A few highlights:
- BetterBack makes every chair ergonomic – Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on one chair, you can make every chair ergonomic.
- Lightweight and portable, you can throw BetterBack in your purse or backpack.
- Next gen back support – The keystone to good posture is the pelvis. Traditional back supports only focus on your lumbar spine. BetterBack stabilizes your pelvis, restoring your spine’s natural curvature, and provides lumbar support.
- 15 minutes a day – Like dumbbells at a gym, BetterBack helps you build up your posture muscles. Wear it for as little as 15 minutes a day to achieve great posture when you stand or sit on your own.
The idea for BetterBack was born when founder Katherine Krug was left with horrible sciatica pain from her 12 to 14 hours a day spent hunched over a desk or digital device, trying to build her startup. When the company failed to fly, Krug began working with a friend to develop a product that would offer relief for her back pain, retrain her muscles for better posture and be small enough to fit in her purse, notes TheBlaze. Despite its unobtrusive size, people noticed the product, Krug’s friends keep asking to borrow it, and Krug was able to put her not inconsiderable entrepreneurial skills to work on a new product.
Krug said,
The goal is whenever anyone is sitting to be sitting properly. If you’re going to sit, do it right.
