Update: “For the Love of Spock” Surpasses $600,000 Goal in the Final Hours on Kickstarter

With nearly 24 hours until his funding initiative on Kickstarter closes, Adam Nimoy (son of Star Trek legend Leonard Nimoy) and his documentary For the Love of Spock officially surpassed its initial $600,000 goal thanks to nearly 8,700 backers.

For the love of Spock 3Earlier this year, Adam and his father approached 455 Films to help produce the film. The production company is made up of David Zappone, Kevin Layne and Joseph Kornbrodt, and Leonard had chosen them because he was familiar with the Star Trek related films that they had produced with William Shatner.

For the Love of Spock will explore the incredible career and artistry of Leonard Nimoy. But what has become increasingly apparent as Adam continues to work on this project is that it’s also a personal journey. Adam stated:

“Last year, my father and I began working on a documentary about the life of Mr. Spock. We were both very much aware that the 50th anniversary of Star Trek the original series was coming up in 2016 and we wanted to create something to commemorate that event, a documentary based primarily on Mr. Spock had never ben done before, and we both felt strongly about paying tribute to the half-human, half-Vulcan first office of the Starship Enterprise.”

He also revealed:

For the love of Spock 1“Although I had initially intended to take a somewhat detached, objective view of the subject matter, more and more people involved in this film have urged me to interject some of my own perspective on what it was like growing up with Mr. Spock in the house, and how Dad’s new-found celebrity and meteoric career affected my life.”

The funding of this film through the campaign will help the production continue and will have interviews of Leonard’s friends, colleagues, and family members. It will also enable the production team to license the hundreds of film clips and still photographs of Mr. Spock as he has appeared on television and in feature films over the last fifty years.

During a recent update, Adam and his team stated:

Nimoy“I feel like I’m on Omicron Ceti III and I’ve just been hit by some spores; I am totally euphoric right now and very happy about having the funding to make For The Love Of Spock, or rather, to finish the film as production is already underway. But it’s not over until it’s over! There’s still time left in the Kickstarter campaign and rest assured, any pledges we receive above our goal will only help make this project better and give me and my production team some wiggle room to add new elements to the film.

“Rest assured, NOTHING WILL BE WASTED. With my experience in television production and 455 Films experience in filmmaking, we know how to cut corners and get the best bang for our buck. Our goal (which we’ve now surpassed) was the minimum for what we determined we needed to do this film justice — but the momentum is there, and any additional funding only helps give us more fantastic options.”

Adam added that if the campaign reaches its $650,000 stretch goal, the film will have more interviews, better graphics and possibly master the final film at a higher resolution.

The campaign is set to close tomorrow evening.
