Nearly two weeks after the close of the Crystal Maze Indiegogo campaign, the game’s former host Richard O’Brien announced he will officially be returning to the set of the popular UK show.
The Crystal Maze campaign kicked off on the platform this past June and quickly surpassed its £500,000. At the end of its crowdfunding run, the project captured £929,642. While describing the new show, the creators Little Lion wrote
“You’ll get to play the maze just as contestants did on the original show – placing you at the centre of the action. What we really want, is for people to live the magic of the hit television programme for themselves. We will be lovingly recreating the famous set just as it was on the original show. All four famous zones will be present; Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Futuristic, not forgetting of course, The Crystal Dome!”
During a recent interview with BBC, O’Brien shared his thoughts about the show’s return:
“It does sound rather wonderful- it almost sounds unbelievably wonderful. I think I’m going to be virtual Rick – they’re going to film me saying ‘welcome here,’ ‘do that,’ and oh, that’s not very good.’
“I loved Aztec Zone – I always wanted to be in the Aztec Zone. We shot it in the middle of winder in an aircraft hanger, which was unheated and freezing, bitterly cold. So every time I got to Aztec I kind of liked it, because the lights came on and I thought, ‘oh well at least it looks warm.’ It wasn’t.”
While discussing the Opening Night at the Maze campaign reward, the project’s organizers revealed why they decided to create an interactive experience:
“Modern audiences want to do, not watch. In recent years, there has been a cultural shift towards entertainment that audiences can engage with in a more active way. More and more we are finding new audiences who want to experience, interact, and play as opposite to watch.
“The Crystal Maze represents the perfect opportunity to do something for this new audience on a grand scale. That same audience who want more active entertainment are the ones who wanted the Crystal Maze growing up – making this not just an innovative idea, but a dream come true for many people, including us.”
