People aren’t the only thing that can leave an indelible mark on you–last summer, my favorite (and only) pair of flip-flops nearly did. It was several weeks into fall 2014 before the tops of my feet lost their crisscross pattern from the Teva flip-flops that I wore whenever I could reasonably get away with it. In Northern California, that’s quite often. By the end of the hot season, the shoes definitely sagged under the burden of my favoritism. Not to be a fair-weather friend, but I may be looking for a new pair next year.
Foot Flops, heat-moldable flip-flops formed to fit your feet, may offer wearers a speedier path to podiatric comfort than the sometimes painful process of breaking in a new pair of these summer staples. The company is now overfunding on Kickstarter, with $44,420 pledged of their $40,000 goal from 630 backers, and 36 days left, as of this writing.
Foot Flops were created by avid skiers and snowboarders Tom Fay and Jamie Mackay, with team member Wes White. The pair noticed how comfortable heat-molded shoe inserts are, realized all the benefits they provided for feet and overall body, and began developing some of the first high-quality, heat-molded, orthotic and arch-supporting flip-flops available.
The shoes come with an interesting instruction guide for use:
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 200 – 250 degrees F depending on desired mold depth.
- Step 2: Insert Foot Flops in oven for 5 – 7 minutes directly on middle rack
- Step 3: Pull out Foot Flops and step directly into the Foot Flops with your foot as close to center as possible.
- Step 4: Ensure Foot Flops are on a hard, even surface during molding
- Step 5: Rock your feet back and forth with equal weight for optimal mold
“The key ingredient is our patent pending thermoplastic layer (Thermo-Form™ foam),” states the company. “What we have succeeded in creating is the perfect materials that form completely to your feet with our patent pending HEAT™ technology.”
Currently, there are over 10 color options, and backer rewards include $30 for an early bird original and pinstripe heat-moldable flip-flops, as well as $7,500 for a Jackson Hole, Wyo., adventure for two.
