Brief: Music Sensation will.i.am Launches RocketHub Initiative to Send East Los Angeles Students to the 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition

On Monday, Singer/songwriter/performer/philanthropist will.i.am is participating in a new crowdfunding project on RocketHub through his i.am.angel Foundation that seeks to raise $100,000 for a robotics program inEast Los Angeles.

Will.I.AmThe goal of the campaign is to raise enough money to send high school students from Boyle Heights, will.i.am’s hometown, to the 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition on January 9th. 

The musician, along with his foundation is currently working with inventor and FIRST Robotics founder Dean Kamen to encourage and celebrate the engineering prowess of kids everywhere.

will.i.am shared:

“I’m proud to help FIRST inspire young people to pursue science and technology careers… The experience that students gain and the values they learn in FIRST programs are crucial to creating the innovative problem solvers of tomorrow.”

Funds from the campaign will also go towards the following:

  • Help cover the costs of sending students from Boyle Heights (East LA) to compete in the First Robotics Competition.
  • Purchase much needed supplies, necessary tools, equipment and materials for Boyle Heights students.
  • Help foster skills that will allow these students to compete for the careers & jobs of the future.
  • Provide tools & funding to further their education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
