Hip Hop Group De La Soul Announces Kickstarter Album Release Date

Earlier this year, 90’s hip hop group, De La Soul, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for its new and highly anticipated album. Now nearly seven months after achieving over $600,000 through the funding initiative, the band has announced the record’s released date.

The bandmates, Posdnous, Dave, and Maseo, previously stated:

De La Soul 4“For the last decade, we’ve been independent artists, free of a record label interfering in our creative process. This will be our first De La Soul studio album in eleven years. We’re excited and ready to create.

“It’s been essential that we find ways to fund, record and release new music. Typically the fans have been the ones who support and appreciate our vision, so using Kickstarter and giving our fans the opportunity to be a part of the process just feels right. We see Kickstarter as a home for creative minds and a wonderful platform; where people who believe, respect and see the vision, can support an idea and make it a reality.

“True to our Hip-Hop roots, we make music without limits. This new album will incorporate elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country Western and anything else we’re feeling in the moment. To us, music is the influence of sounds, sounds in all vibrations and sizes, telling a story or pointing a direction. Some of these sounds we call samples, samples we use to make songs.”

De La Soul 2The bandmates collaborated with other artists for the album, including:

  • Damon Albarn of Blur/Gorillaz
  • 2 Chainz
  • Little Dragon
  • David Byrne of Talking Heads

During a recent update, the group shared:

“Releasing a record independently has been a real undertaking. In addition to artistic satisfaction, the administrative and executive end had to feel right as well. Side artist clearances and appropriating the best distribution for this project has been just as important. With negotiations complete, we are now working on the plan for our awaited release. Thank you all for your patience.”

The trio went on to add that it’ll be debuting its new song, ‘Train Wreck,’ in late December. They will also be dropping their first single, ‘Pain,’ featuring Snoop Dogg, in February/March.

The new album will release on April 29th.
