Just a few months after securing over $2 million through its Opal Nugget Indiegogo initiative, FirstBuild has shared details about the production of the ice maker to backers.
The FirstBuild team stated in a recent update:
“We’re currently deep into the development phase of Opal and we wanted to give you a quick status update. The picture below shows the results of our hard work over the last several months in detail. Believe it or not, it was quite a challenge squeezing all of the equipment required to make and store nugget ice into such a small package. What are all those wires for? Well, the engineering team is running tests on the latest model and they have instrumented it to get a whole bunch of diagnostic information that will help us make the next iteration better.
“Much of our current focus centers on the overall functionality of the ice making process (rate of ice production, melt rate, etc.). We’re also testing the notification system (the light) that will tell you when Opal needs more water and when ice is being made. We’ve made the ice bucket deeper while shortening it to balance out the unit and prevent overflowing, all while maintaining the 3+ pound ice capacity.”

Opal is an affordable countertop nugget ice maker designed by the FirstBuild community and priced well below other currently available ice making appliance.
