Nearly 30,000 Supporters Raise Over £900,000 on GoFundMe Following the Tragic Death of MP Jo Cox

Following the devastating death of British Labour Party politician, Helen Joanne “Jo” Coxnearly 30,000 supporters have raised over £900,000 through the GoFundMe campaign, Jo Cox’s Fund, which was launched by her family and friends.

Jo_Cox,_British_politicianOn June 16th, Cox fatally shot and stabbed outside the library of Birstall, West Yorkshire, where she was about to hold a constituency surgery. The politician was reportedly shot three times and stabbed multiple times. Just four hours after the incident, Cox succumbed to her injuries and passed away at Leeds General Infirmary. Tommy Mair, of Birstall, was charged with murder and was to appear in front of the courts this past weekend.

The campaign reads:

“This page has been created by Jo Cox’s friends in London, including Nick Grono (CEO, The Freedom Fund), Tim Dixon (MD, Purpose), Mabel van Oranje (Chair, Girls Not Brides), and Gemma Mortensen (Chief Global Officer, Change.org), in close collaboration with her husband Brendan Cox. Once funds are gathered they will be split between Jo’s favourite causes, chosen by her family.”

Funds from the campaign will reportedly go to the following organizations:

  • equity floridaThe Royal Voluntary Service: Supports volunteers that are helping combat loneliness in Jo’s constituency, Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire.
  • HOPE not hate: Seeks to challenge and defeat the politics of hate and extremism within local communities across Britain.
  • The White Helmets: A volunteer search and rescue workers in Syria. Unarmed and neutral, these heroes have saved more than 51,000 lives from under the rubble and bring hope to the region.

The organizers of the campaign quoted her husband:

“Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people. She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.”
