Seeking to help athletes from all over the world reach their Olympic dreams, GoFundMe announced on Monday its new global competition for those looking to achieve the gold at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“As a former athlete, I’m glad that GoFundMe can join in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship. I want to encourage all members of the GoFundMe giving community to support these athletes as they compete for greatness on the worldwide stage.”
Earlier this month, GoFundMe shared nearly 100 athletes have raised nearly $400,000 as they work to qualify and compete in Brazil. In an effort to help the Olympic hopefuls, GoFundMe created a hub to connect its giving community of 25 million donors with the athletes training to compete in the games.
“As a former athlete myself, it’s exciting to see these young competitors on the road to Rio turn to GoFundMe to achieve their dreams. I hope others are inspired to join our giving community and support these athletes.”
Here are the details of GoFundMe’s Olympic contest:
How to Qualify: Athletes must be an Olympian on the Road to Rio. They are only eligible if they have already qualified for the Olympics or if they are participating in an upcoming Olympic trial.
How to Win: The competition starts on Monday, June 27th at 12 pm PT through Friday, July 15th at 12 pm PT. If an athlete does not have a GoFundMe campaign and wishes to compete for the $10,000 prize, they can create a campaign and raise funds through Friday, July 15th.
