GoFundMe Teams Up with Michelle Obama & Obama Foundation for Girls Education

Global crowdfunding platform GoFundMe announced on Thursday it has partnered with former First Lady Michelle Obama to seek funding for the newly launched Global Girls Alliance, a new Obama Foundation program that seeks to empower adolescent girls around the world through education. According to GoFundMe, The Global Girls Alliance is seeking to empower adolescent girls through education by:

  • Inspiring, empowering, and connecting grassroots leaders
  • Driving specific commitments through GoFundMe
  • Inspiring and challenging young people in the developed world to join this Global Girls Alliance

Speaking about the new program, Mrs. Obama stated:

“We want to lift up the grassroots leaders in communities all over the world who are clearing away the hurdles that too many girls face. Because the evidence is clear: educating girls isn’t just good for the girls, it’s good for all of us.”

Obama Foundation CEO, David Simas. also commented:

“Through Mrs. Obama’s passion for this issue, our aim is to drive global attention, awareness, and action—and generate commitments to help empower adolescent girls around the world, so that they can, in turn, support their families, communities, and countries.”

The first GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign has been launched and is currently seeking $250,000 and so far it has secured more than $100,000 from nearly 750 supporters. Its description reads:

“Right now, more than 98 million adolescent girls worldwide are not in school. That’s why the Global Girls Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation, is teaming up with GoFundMe to encourage people around the world to take action by helping to break down the barriers that keep girls from fulfilling their potential.

“When we invest in girls’ education, it doesn’t just benefit them—it benefits all of us. An educated girl can lift up her family, her community, and her country. When girls get the opportunities they deserve, amazing things start to happen. Poverty goes down, economies grow, families get stronger, babies are born healthier, and the world, by all accounts, gets better.”
