Iran: Power Generation Company Shutters 1100 Crypto Mining Operations

Taviner, the power generation and transmission company of Iran, has shut down 1100 crypto mining farms that apparently were not licensed to do business in the country.

In the summer of 2019, it was reported that the Iranian government had legalized crypto mining companies for firms that had received a license. The report in the Financial Tribune said whistleblowers had blown the cover of the illegal operations thus earning a reward of 11 million rials (about USD $2375.00) for the tip. Reportedly, miners are installing equipment at locations that use a lot of energy that is paid for at a subsidized rate.

In January it was reported that over 1000 licenses had been issued to approved crypto miners in Iran.

Last month, the Financial Tribune reported that Taviner would offer a 47% power tariff discount to crypto miners. Apparently it was not enough to encourage some operators to seek a crypto mining license.
