Digital Banking Challenger Lunar Reports 1M+ Users

Nordic challenger bank Lunar has announced reaching 1 million users, a significant milestone in its mission to transform the banking experience for individuals and businesses across the Nordics.

The achievement of 1 million users highlights Lunar’s growth in the Nordic banking landscape.

Ken Villum Klausen, CEO and Founder of Lunar said:

“Reaching 1 million users is more than just a number – it’s a reflection of the trust our users place in us, and the hard work of the entire Lunar team. It’s moments like these that remind us why we started this journey: to build something that truly works for people. We’re not just building a bank; we’re creating a financial ecosystem that puts people first, where everything we do is aimed at making banking smarter, faster, and more personalized.”

Lunar’s path to 1 million users has been driven by “bold innovation and a commitment to redefining banking in the Nordics.”

Since its founding in 2015 in Aarhus, Lunar has “aimed to disrupt traditional banking—securing its own banking license in 2019, expanding into Sweden and Norway, and introducing cutting-edge digital solutions.”

Key milestones include the launch of Lunar Business in 2020, a crypto offering in 2022, the “introduction of Scandinavia’s first SAS EuroBonus debit card in 2024, and the newly launched Lunar Youth, a banking app for kids and teenagers, in 2025.”

Lunar also recently “introduced the in-app AI Assistant as well as Europe’s first AI Voice Assistant in customer service.”

Today, 70% of all written customer requests “are handled entirely by AI.”

Ken Villum Klausen said:

“Looking ahead, we’re not slowing down. We’re committed to challenging the traditional banking landscape and becoming the go-to everyday bank for people across the Nordics. We’ll keep innovating and adding new features and services to empower consumers and businesses with smarter, more seamless financial solutions.”

Backed by €500 million in investments, Lunar has “pushed boundaries to redefine what users can expect from their bank.”

In 2024, Lunar took a significant step by “transitioning its BaaS offering to a standalone entity called Moonrise.”

This move allows Lunar to further transform the banking landscape, opening its infrastructure “to international challenger banks and fintechs and overcoming long-standing barriers to entry in the Nordic markets.”

As covered, Lunar is a Nordic challenger bank, “built to redefine what banking should be.”

Founded in Aarhus, Denmark, Lunar employs “around 400 people across the Nordic region.”

In 2019, Lunar had received its banking license and now claims that it has since “become one of the few banks with a Nordic banking platform.”

Today, it also claims to have “over 1 million private and business users across the Nordics use Lunar.”
