British Columbia to Ban New Bitcoin and Crypto Mining Projects

British Columbia, which is one of Canada’s largest provinces in terms of overall population, recently noted that it intends to place a complete ban on any new Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining operations. British Columbia said that it aims to prevent such initiatives from connecting with the Canadian government electricity supply / power grid in an effort to preserve the national and provincial power supply.

According to a release, these actions are meant to address the rising demand for electricity and also intend to ensure that the province’s and Canadian economic objectives are safeguarded in the allocation of British Columbia’s clean-electricity supply.

British Columbia has filed the energy statutes amendment act (submitted recently to the regional legislature). This is aimed at ensuring that electricity is adequately supplied to industry segments that are set to create more jobs and boost public revenue as well as sustainable business growth.

It referenced certain cases in other regions where unmonitored power demands from nascent industries had led to considerable rate increases for taxpaying residents.

Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions explained that their latest allocation framework aims to prioritize critical growth in industries such as mining, natural gas as well as lowest-emission LNG. They want to make sure that their clean energy is provided to initiatives that provided the most tangible benefits to British Columbia residents.

The Canadian province intends to issue a range of policy changes that may restrict power allocations to data centers as well as AI projects. Notably, there would be a complete ban enforced on any new BTC and digital currency mining power connections made to BC Hydro, which is the province’s power utility that depends mainly on harnessing hydroelectricity. Currently, British Columbia has placed a moratorium on any new cryptocurrency mining initiatives and the policy update is set to make this a permanent ban.

David Eby, Premier of British Columbia, stated that the legislation may assist them with moving more quickly on the North Coast Transmission Line, a nation-building initiative that could provide cleaner electricity to sustainable power industrial growth and job creation.
