OnPay, Betterment at Work Partner to Deliver 401(k) Solutions for SMBs

OnPay, a payroll and human resources platform, has introduced a comprehensive integration with Betterment at Work, a provider of modern retirement plans. Announced today, the collaboration introduces a fully connected 401(k) offering that allows businesses to handle payroll deductions and retirement benefits within a single, efficient system.

This partnership aims to bridge a notable gap in employee benefits by making high-quality workplace retirement plans more accessible and straightforward to manage.

Recent research conducted by OnPay highlights a persistent challenge: just 41 percent of small businesses currently provide any form of retirement savings option to their staff.

The new integration seeks to change that by linking payroll processing directly with 401(k) administration.

Employers can now establish a plan quickly and benefit from automatic data synchronization, which minimizes errors, ensures regulatory compliance, and cuts down on repetitive manual tasks that often overwhelm lean payroll teams.

The “360-degree” setup creates a closed-loop connection between the two platforms. Headcount changes—such as onboarding new employees or processing departures—are reflected instantly across systems.

Contribution details, including employee deferrals, employer matching funds, and any loan repayments, transfer automatically with each payroll cycle.

This level of automation not only streamlines operations but also supports greater accuracy in plan management.

“Small-business owners frequently express interest in adding a 401(k) benefit, yet they hesitate because of the perceived complexity and time involved in running it,” noted Patrick Beahm, Vice President of Product at OnPay.

“By linking our payroll capabilities with Betterment at Work’s technology, we remove much of that friction. Payroll and retirement information stay aligned automatically, freeing leaders to focus on growth rather than paperwork.”

Thomas Moore, Senior Director of B2B Partnerships at Betterment, echoed the enthusiasm.

“Partnering with OnPay represents a natural alignment of strengths. Our flexible, tech-forward 401(k) plans combined with OnPay’s payroll tools give growing companies an effective way to attract and retain talent while promoting long-term financial health among employees.”

Beyond the technical synchronization, the integrated solution emphasizes employee engagement. Workers gain access to an intuitive digital experience that includes personalized investment guidance, educational tools, and ongoing support from both providers.

This user-friendly approach helps participants make informed decisions about their savings, regardless of their investing experience.

The partnership underscores a broader trend toward integrated benefits platforms that reduce complexity for employers of every size. By eliminating the need for separate data uploads and manual reconciliations, OnPay and Betterment at Work are lowering barriers that have historically kept many small businesses from offering various retirement packages.
