Belize Bank Limited, which is reportedly one of the country’s oldest and largest financial institution, has entered a six-year collaboration with Dutch fintech firm Backbase. The agreement centers on deploying Backbase’s AI-native Banking OS to overhaul digital services for both retail and business customers.
Officials describe the initiative as the most substantial digital banking upgrade in Belize’s history, intended to deliver a modern, scalable experience for the nation’s leading bank.
Belize Bank holds roughly 43 percent of the country’s total banking assets and serves more than 100,000 retail and business clients.
With assets exceeding $1 billion and the most extensive branch network in Belize, the institution required technology capable of supporting continued growth while providing consistent, high-quality digital channels.
The new platform will sit atop the bank’s existing core banking system rather than replace it.
Backbase’s Connectivity Layer, known as Grand Central, enables seamless integration with current systems so the bank can manage the full customer journey without a disruptive core overhaul.
On the customer side, the Banking OS is expected to replace disjointed processes with immediate self-service options, faster digital account opening, and clearer, consolidated cash-flow views for business clients.
Internally, the shift aims to remove operational silos by giving staff a single, unified view of each customer.
This should shorten the time needed to resolve service issues from days to minutes in many cases.
Additional marketplace solutions for fraud prevention, identity verification, and electronic signatures will round out the technology stack, creating a cohesive digital banking environment.
Jouk Pleiter, CEO of Backbase, noted that Belize Bank represents the type of institution the platform was designed to support—one that prioritizes customer responsibility and seeks technology aligned with that ambition.
He highlighted the comprehensive scope of the modernization across retail, small and medium enterprise, and digital lending segments as evidence of the bank’s strategic focus.
Filippo Alario, Executive Chairman of Belize Bank Limited, described the partnership as a transformative move toward seamless, intelligent, and personalized banking.
He emphasized that combining Backbase’s capabilities with the bank’s customer-first approach will help create deeper connections and change how Belizeans interact with financial services beyond simple transactions.
The move builds on earlier technology investments by Belize Bank, including a recent core system modernization and migration to the cloud that positioned the institution as a regional pioneer in that area.
Those earlier steps provided the foundation for layering advanced digital engagement tools.
By integrating AI-native capabilities, the bank aims to support faster product development, improved operational efficiency, and greater financial inclusion across Belize’s diverse customer base.
This collaboration reflects broader trends in which established banks in emerging markets adopt specialized digital platforms to remain competitive.
For Belize Bank, the partnership is positioned as a long-term investment in the country’s financial infrastructure, enabling it to scale services while maintaining relationship-driven banking strengths. Implementation details and rollout timelines will unfold over the six-year term as the institutions work together to bring the new capabilities online.
