Bitcoin Price Tests Dense Supply Wall Near $86,500 as Spot BTC Demand Decides Next Move

Bitcoin (BTC) is pressing against one of its densest clusters of recent buyer cost basis, according to analysts at Bitfinex. Roughly 1.72 million coins, representing about 8.6 percent of the total supply, changed hands between $84,000 and $86,500.

That band now functions as a thick overhead supply wall. A sustained daily close above $86,500 would return the bulk of those BTC holders to unrealized profit.

Historically, cohorts that move back into the green have shown a greater tendency to defend a level than to sell into it, which could thin immediate resistance if spot demand follows through.

Bitfinex’s latest Alpha notes frame the nearer-term picture as consolidation. Bitcoin tested a high near $87,197 in early October before retreating, marking repeated rejection beneath the 2026 yearly open around $87,722.

The exchange’s base case keeps price oscillating above the $84,000 area—the single largest cost-basis concentration and the threshold at which roughly three-quarters of supply sits in profit—while awaiting clearer spot participation.

Upside resolution, in their view, hinges on US spot ETF inflows recovering toward the stronger daily averages seen in late September, on the order of several hundred million dollars per session.

A decisive break and hold below roughly $81,300, especially if accompanied by ETF outflows, would reopen the path toward the high-$70,000s and the True Market Mean near $77,200.

Futures open interest has already contracted, leaving any durable advance more dependent on actual coin purchases than on leveraged positioning.Swiss institutions offer complementary context.

Sygnum Bank’s October protocol review noted that Bitcoin still finished September higher despite a Federal Reserve rate increase, a stalled U.S. market-structure bill, and rising long-end yields.

ETF flows swung sharply inside the month—from hundreds of millions in outflows mid-month to multi-billion-dollar inflows over the following sessions—underscoring that institutional demand remains episodic rather than steadily accelerating.

Bitcoin Suisse’s 2026 outlook, published earlier, continues to sketch a constructive longer-horizon path in which Bitcoin could approach substantially higher levels if macroeconomic conditions turn more supportive and prior infrastructure build-out is priced in, though that scenario assumes a more accommodative policy backdrop than the current hiking bias.

Broader market commentary aligns on the importance of incremental adoption.

Anthony Pompliano has argued that crypto’s still-limited share of global assets leaves room for demand to expand from both traditional investors and automated agents, implying higher prices and faster capital velocity as penetration grows.

On the venture side, PitchBook data show crypto companies finally producing a wave of public listings in 2025, with deal value reaching nearly $20 billion and growth-stage rounds surging; observers expect 2026 could sustain that liquidity if remaining regulatory questions around market structure and stablecoins are resolved, even as the wider venture market continues to wrestle with scarce exits.

Taken together, the near-term tape is defined by the $84,000–$86,500 supply concentration. Clearing it cleanly would shift a large holder cohort from potential sellers into potential holders, but Bitfinex stresses that futures alone have already proven insufficient. Sustained ETF and spot absorption remain the decisive variables.
