JPMorgan’s 2027 Long-Term Outlook Places Bitcoin Ahead of Stocks, Bonds, and Gold

J.P. Morgan Asset Management (NYSE: JPM) has, for the first time in the three-decade history of its annual Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions (LTCMA), assigned explicit return projections to Bitcoin. In the 31st edition of the report, released on October 19, 2026, the firm’s base-case estimate calls for a 10 percent annualized compound return on Bitcoin over a 10- to 15-year horizon.

That figure sits above every major stock, bond, and gold forecast presented in the accompanying tables.

The 10 percent compound figure is paired with an arithmetic average return of 20.9 percent and an annualized volatility estimate of 55 percent.

By comparison, the same document projects 7.5 percent compound returns for U.S. large-cap equities (an 80-basis-point upgrade from the prior edition), 5.5 percent for gold, and 8.2 percent for U.S. real estate investment trusts.

Global aggregate bonds are forecast at 5.3 percent—the highest reading in two decades—while a conventional 60/40 stock-bond portfolio is expected to deliver 7.0 percent. Even private-equity projections in the broader set of assumptions fall short of Bitcoin’s base case in the comparisons highlighted by the report.

The Bitcoin estimates rest on a three-factor framework weighted according to the firm’s confidence in each driver.

Supply growth dynamics relative to U.S. and global money supply (weighted at 65 percent) produce a base-case 10.7 percent return.

A scenario in which Bitcoin functions as a partial portfolio complement to gold (30 percent weight) yields the same 10.7 percent base case. Network-adoption effects (5 percent weight) contribute a more modest –3.2 percent.

Combining these inputs produces the overall base case of 10.0 percent, with a bear case of –11.2 percent and a bull case of 16.6 percent.

Spot price data underlying the calculations were taken as of September 30, 2026, near $83,000.The report’s authors are careful to limit the practical implications of these numbers.

They describe Bitcoin as a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing rather than a reliable portfolio diversifier.

Unstable historical correlations with other asset classes, combined with the elevated volatility, led the team to withhold Bitcoin from the main covariance matrices used for strategic asset allocation.

A smaller, standalone covariance matrix is provided for illustration only.

The text notes that further declines in volatility, more stable correlations, clearer regulation, and deeper market infrastructure could eventually change this stance, but such conditions are not assumed to prevail over the forecast horizon.

Any allocation, the authors emphasize, should be stress-tested against both the bull and bear scenarios.

The broader LTCMA outlook is shaped by three structural themes: economic nationalism, technology adoption (centered on artificial intelligence), and capital rewiring.

These forces support the firm’s most constructive developed-world growth outlook in 15 years, with US real GDP projected at 2.1 percent and developed-market nominal growth at 4.2 percent.

Higher real yields and resilient corporate profit margins drive the upgrades to equities and bonds, while the Bitcoin range is presented as an exploratory addition rather than a core recommendation.

In short, J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s first formal long-term Bitcoin forecast places the asset at the top of the return rankings in its 2027 tables, yet the accompanying risk metrics and explicit exclusion from standard portfolio models underscore that the projection remains an exploratory range rather than an allocation signal.
