Star Citizen has raised over $15 million in a crowdfunding campaign that has been operating for the better part of the last year. Now Chris Roberts and the rest of the team charged with bringing the video game to reality are beginning delivery to backers.
It is a staged delivery model, so backers will received features of the game piece by piece. The first piece? A digital hanger backers can store their spaceships in.
According to Polygon, the hangars will be launched Thursday morning and will come in three sizes depending on the amount of funding provided by the backer.
The Hangar Module was not something we promised during the initial crowdfunding campaign. We had originally promised to share how the game was made with regular updates on our website and give early backers access the full game’s Alpha and Beta builds. But once we started development we came upon the idea of taking the constant public iteration that you get with a “live” online game and applying it during the game’s development to allow us to engage and involve the Star Citizen community of backers in the process of the making of the game.Chris Roberts
Backers will be able to walk around and explore the ships, with certain ships being gifted to certain backers based on rewards. Eventually the team plans to release a sim mode that will allow players to test their flight skills in preparation for the live game later on down the road.
In the meantime, the money keeps rolling in for Star Citizen. Funding for the game has just crossed $16 million, making this arguably the largest single crowdfunding campaign ever.
