Worlds “first citizen science project to sequence the human micro biome” – uBiome – raised $351,000 on Indiegogo in one of the largest “citizen science” crowdfunding campaigns ever. The campaign ran from November 16, 2012 to February 18, 2013 – closing almost one year ago. uBiome sent microbiome kits to backers where they could sample their gastrointestinal tract allowing the organizers to sample a large group of data in their goal to study the human microbiome ecosystem.
Now the project has shifted gears and they are raising capital on AngelList.
The small company is looking to raise $1.5 million in convertible debt and they already have some serious investors participating in this funding round. Georges Harik (one of Google’s first ten employees), Dave McClure of 500 startups and many other prominent investors are committing to this offer.

Founded by UCSF scientists and Stanford and Cambridge technologists including Jessica Richman and Zacher Apte, uBiome is using data to understand the human microbiome. They are the first and only data company focused on the microbiome.
In 2013 the company generated $500,000 in revenue having mailed 7000 sample kits. Their compare their “big data from bacteria” to the human genome project which was completed in 2003. Microbiome commercialization is on just starting today. The company wants to help consumers and organizations understand what they are and what they do. uBiome
