Ouya Sells 13-19K Retail Units In June As Google Ramps Up To Compete

OUYA GAME CONSOLEAccording to recent data from video game industry analyst NPD, Ouya sold 13,000 to 19,000 units via retail sales channels in the month of June. That does not include any units sold on their website or the units shipped to Kickstarter backers.

19,000 units isn’t a huge number by gaming industry standards. The best-selling home console, the Xbox 360, sold 140,000 units last month. It’s been the #1 home console for 30 months straight.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman takes issue with the numbers. Joystiq shared the following statement:

Nobody thinks much about NPD numbers since we all know they miss critical data including reporting from digital retailers or company sites. OUYA sold every unit available launch week and are currently still chasing demand.

Ouya’s success has garnered the attention of at least one familiar Internet conglomerate: Google, who is reportedly  in the process of developing an Android-powered console to compete with the likes of Ouya.
