Soma Games Kickstarting A Redwall Video Game

redwall

Redwall is a hugely popular children’s fantasy book series by author Brian Jacques. The series consists of 22 novels, the last of which was released in May of 2011 shortly after Jacques’s death. The series sold over 30 million copies since its inception in the mid 1980’s.

Now video game developer Soma Games has taken to Kickstarter to crowdfund an officially-licensed video game based on the series, starting with a Minecraft map and later a full adventure game.

Soma Games is a subset of Code-Monkeys, a shop responsible for over 300 apps and games for clients like Intel and Belkin. Some has teamed with Sean Rubin, who has been the official artists for the Redwall series in recent years.

“Redwall” is the name of the mythical abbey in the series where many of the main characters live, and the Minecraft map is being used as a way to develop the castle layout in preparation for the full game to come.

The full game is being billed as a “progressive adventure game” with three playable races. The game will consist mostly of puzzles but will also integrate exploration, a natural outcome for a series that was as much about the geography and the buildings as it was about the characters themselves.

The game will be released on iOS, Android and the PC via Steam.

After a little more than a week and despite earlier problems with Amazon Payments, the project is over 90% of it’s way to a goal of $11,000. It is certain to be fully funded.
