The company which has defined rewards based crowdfunding – Kickstarter – recently surpassed having captured over 5 Million backers from around the world – which Crowdfund Insider reported on earlier this month. In a posting on their site, Kickstarter shared some additional insight regarding this milestone:
- More than 50,o00 successfully funded creative projects
- Total Money Pledged $848,707,743.37
- Total Pledges 11,379,607
- Project funding success rate 43.84%
- 29% of backers are repeat supporters or 1,473,393
- More than 41,000 people have supported more than 25 projects
- 2400 have backed 100 or more projects
- 8 people have backed more than 1000 projects (two are Kickstarter employees)
Kickstarter expects to go beyond the 1 Billion mark in pledges early next year if their velocity continues. Not too bad for a 5 year old company. This number takes on more meaning considering the average pledge on the platform is around $25 with the majority of successful projects raising less than $10,000.
Simultaneously 861 projects have raised over $100,000 with 50 projects having crowdfunding over $1 Million. The most funded campaign today is the Pebble Smartwatch which raised $10,266,845 in May of 2012. Pretty awesome numbers for a concept that has captured traction only in the past few years.
Kickstarter’s top three categories are as follows:
- Games – $164 Million successful dollars
- Film & Video – $145 Million successful dollars
- Design – $102 Million successful dollars
The company has steadily expanded into other countries over the past months. Most recently the site has launched an initiative in Canada. Presently Kickstarter is prepping to launch in Australia and New Zealand. The company has raised funds from 90% of the countries existing today.
