Soylent, the meal replacement dream drink, is now shipping to supporters of the self crowdfunding project launched on the CrowdHoster platform. Created by computer science geek Rob Rhinehart the powdered drink mix posed the question; “what if you never had to worry about food again?” and the world responded.
Originally all queued up to launch a Kickstarter campaign, Soylent encountered challenges that pushed them towards Crowdhoster by Crowdtilt where they easily surpassed their initial $100,000 goal raising over 10 times that amount. The company went on to capture additional VC funding to help build their total nutrition product. While carefully positioned as a meal replacement option – not food replacement- supporters saw the practicality in consuming a drink that provided all the required nutrients while eliminating waste and time. Soylent has the potential to become a much needed supplement in parts of the world where draught and famine may occur.
While the delivery of its first batches were delayed several times – the Soylent crew is now ramping up production and expect to scale throughout the month of May. Options for purchase can provide a months worth of Soylent for as little as $255 – an economical alternative to trips to the grocery. There is even a Vegan blend that does not include fish oil.
Claims are that Soylent is pretty tasty and while think a daily drink may get pretty bland – it must be said that in our fast food culture it is hard to criticize something that can assist in tackling poor nutrition and chronic obesity.
