Back in the fall of 2013, original creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League Football & Hockey, Michael Mendheim, teamed up with Run Games to launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise $750,000 so that they may bring the Football Heroes Engine to new game, Mutant Football League.
According to the project’s description, an all-star team of talent has been assembled to breathe new life into one of the video game industry’s most beloved sports-hybrid games. Mendheim drove the effort of resurrecting the classic gaming genre with Mutant Football League. The plan was to bring the game to PC/Steam, Xbox LIVE, PSN, along with iOS and Android tablets.
Unfortunately, the Mutant Football League didn’t meet its initial goal, and raised nearly $142,00 thanks to 1,105. But Mendheim made sure to note that he planned to not abandon the project despite the Kickstarter failure. “Sad day for sure but want you all to know we’re not going to give up on Mutant Football. We’re going to keep fighting to get this game to market. We’ll be back! I promise.”
Now the game has resurfaced on YouTube with a new pre-alpha video. Its description reads, “Some exclusive pre-alpha, in game footage of Mutant Football League! If you like classic Sega Genesis Mutant League Football, or NFL Blitz and Blood Bowl, or if you love football games and want to literally dismember your opponent, then check out this early game play footage from the Creator of the original EA football classic. This is a football video game featuring bone crushing, extreme violence and everything you would expect, but this time, the gloves are off! Stay tuned for Secrets of the game and of course, we want to hear from you!”
