Someone by the name of “Ryan Nets” created a campaign on Kickstarter’s rival, Indiegogo that was loking to raise $1.5 million. The initiative contained everything that backers saw on Kickstarter, word for word and image by image. The only item that was differentiated the projects was an embedded YouTube video of the game’s crowdfunding announcement during Sony’s press conference at E3
Eurogamer revealed that Nets doesn’t seem to be a very truthful person when it comes to crowdfunding. He previously created three other campaigns, one being called “The Poster Shop” while another “Help William Shatner to Fund the $30 billion Pipe. His most recent campaign was called “Let’s Troll the Internet” and he wrote:
“How much can we raise for no cause. Let’s Troll the internet and see how much money we can raise for jokes 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 a dollar would be a fun start.”
Luckily, before any backers could give to the project, Net’s Shenmue III was shut down by Indiegogo. Although there has yet to any word from the crowdfunding platform about why it decided to pull the plug, it’s obvious that the campaign was a fake.
Meanwhile, the real Shenmau III campaign has successfully raised well over$3 million in less than 3 days. The organizers stated in a recent update:
“Beloved Shenmue Fans Around The World! Thank you so much everyone! You have spoken and the message has been heard loud and clear. We want Shenmue! We have reached our funding goal of $2 million! But! We have Stretch Goals all lined up to make this truly the best Shenmue yet. Please keep the forklift trucking along and lift this Kickstarter up as far as it can go! Let’s keep it up and make this moment, THE Shenmue moment!
“And thank you for all of your comments! Too many we can’t keep up! So if you have questions concerning Shenmue 3, we please ask that you direct your question to us by sending a message, and we will do our absolute best to get back to you. Thank you again! Lots more Shenmue coming up, so let’s keep the reunion party going and bring everyone you know!”
