Kickstarter phenoms and Pentagram Associate partners Jesse Reed and Hamish Smith have experienced quite a crowdfunding year. A little less than a year after raking in $802,812 on Kickstarter and setting a Kickstarter design record for their New York City Transit Authority Standards Manual project, graphic designers Reed and Smyth returned to the crowdfunding platform to raise $158,000 for the Reissue of the 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual. With a few hours remaining on the NASA Graphics Standards Manual campaign — the project will close today at$923,797, significantly overfunding their initial
While NASA did not issue a statement about the impromptu release of the manual, Reed believed that the timing is a bit coincidental, stating to Motherboard:
“We can’t say the move is directly responding to our project, but it’s safe to suspect they are related.” Adding the download is no replacement for their book. “It’s great that they’re making the guidelines available to the public, we think they should be. That said, we don’t think that having an online PDF is the easiest way to engage with the information.”
Reed and Smyth also have made a NYCTA Standards Manual Compact Edition made available for those who missed last year’s opportunity to own Kickstarter’s most funded design project (it looks like NASA will shortly dethrone NYCTA of this honor). The Compact Edition ships in October, and can be preordered at the reduced price of $49.50 with free shipping in the US (excluding Hawaii and AK).
“If you have friends of family who missed out on the limited edition version please pass on this update to them—it will make a great holiday gift,” commented the campaign.
The Compact Edition is a 10″ version of the Manual which fits on a standard bookshelf, but does not contain the foreword and essay familiar in the limited edition versions or the glossy paper stock for the PMS color section.
