Brief: Humans of New York Secures Over $750,000 For 11 Syrian families in Less Than Two Weeks on Generosity

Nearly two week ago, Humans of New York (HONY) founder, Brandon Stanton, launched a new crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo’s platform, Generosity, to raise $100,000 for eleven Syrian families looking to create a fresh start. Within hours of launch, the project secured well over its initial goal and has successfully raised over $750,000 thanks to 18,000 supporters.

Humans of New YorkStanton and his team shared:

“Earlier this month we profiled eleven Syrian families that were preparing to begin new lives in America.  They have escaped a horrible war, and have finally secured a degree of safety and security, but the road will be very tough for them.  They will be starting at zero in a new country.  In addition to the culture shock, they will face innumerable obstacles, including the need to learn an entirely new language.  As they attempt to get their footing, they will be provided with little more than the bare minimum needed to subsist.”

It was revealed that the amount raised over the first 48 hours of the campaign would be divided among the refugee families (which were each featured on the HONY website and social media platforms last month). If any of the families declined any assistance from the organization, their share would go towards the resettlement organization that is helping them with transition.

Although the campaign was set to close after the 48 hours, it is currently up and supporters may still give funds if they wish.
