David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, the filmmakers behind the Kickstarter-funded film The Bill Nye Film, announced on Tuesday that the documentary will premiere SXSW 2017, which will be held in March 10th-19h. As previously reported, the film surfaced on the funding portal in 2015 and captured $859,425 from 16,850 backers. Its description reads:
“Bill Nye is on a quest to change the world, and we want you to be part of it! Once the host of a popular kid’s show, Bill is about to take off his Science Guy lab coat and battle the naysayers to create a more scientifically literate and engaged universe. We’re going to make a film about it. A film for science. A film for the cosmos. The full access, exclusive film about Bill Nye.”
The filmmakers also noted:
“We’re documentary filmmakers, but we’re also hardcore Bill Nye fans who spent our middle school years learning about the ecosystem and the color spectrum from his trusty VHS tapes. Bill’s passion and enthusiasm stayed with us, and when we got older, we started making films about science and technology. When we learned that Bill Nye was doing something new, working outside of the classroom to champion science and space exploration and the fight against climate change, we knew we had to make this documentary.
In the campaign’s recent update, Alvarado and Sussberg revealed:
“We’re thrilled to announce that our documentary film will have its World Premiere at SXSW in March. Wheeeeeeee! South by Southwest is the perfect event to introduce our film— it is the geek Mecca for science, tech and pop culture. We had the privilege of premiering our first feature The Immortalists there and we couldn’t be more delighted to return with this film.”
The duo also announced the film’s new title, Bill Nye: Science Guy. They then added that many of the backers will received their rewards after the SXSW premiere. This includes those who backed for a private sneak peek screening, a stream of the film, or Blu ray.
