Update: Victoria Islamic Center Receives $1.1 Million Through GoFundMe Campaign

Less than a week after a fire destroyed the Islamic center located in Victoria, Texas, supporters of the place of worship have raised more than $1.1 million through crowdfunding platform, GoFundMe.

As previously reported, the devastating event took place in the early hours of last Saturday. The news of the fire came just hours after President Trump issued a 90-day travel restriction for seven countries and a 120-day halt of the Syrian refugee relief. The center’s staff issued a statement that read:

“Investigation is still ongoing on the cause of fire by local, state, FBI, and ATF! The outpouring support from our wonderful Victoria community and all over the nation have been phenomenal! UNITED WE STAND! Please don’t politicize the tragedy!”

The staff also noted that supporters from all over joined its gathering, along with thousands of messages, prayers, and donations from all over the globe have been donated to show support for the mosque. The Center announced earlier this week that members of the local Jewish temple, the Congregation B’Nai Israel, offered their house of worship to the Center’s members. They gave their synagogue’s keys to one of the mosque’s founders.

All funds will be used to help rebuild the center. Following the closing of the campaign, the staff shared:

“And the rebuilding begins! We are able to do this because of the [generosity] of the Victoria community, our fellow Americans, and people around the world.Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
