With less than one week until its Kickstarter campaign comes to an end, Isaac Childres’ Gloomhaven second printing project has successfully secured nearly $3 million thanks to more than 30,700 backers. As previously reported, Gloomhaven is described as a cooperative card-drive game of combat of 1-4 players. The game’s story reads:
“It’s a grim but lucrative business being a mercenary out on the edge of civilization. You must explore the harsh wilderness and engage in deep tactical combat, where the decisions you make have an impact not only on your own character, but also the world around you.”
Each of the game’s scenario is played out through rounds of combat against fully automated enemies and each round, players will play two cards to determine the order in which they act and what abilities they perform. Each of the cards has two special actions, and on their turn, players can perform the top action of one card and the bottom action of the other. Although there is no dice in the board game, all attacks are modified by a player’s attack deck and over time, the attack deck will change as a player begins to add and remove cards by completing battle goals and leveling up.
The original Gloomhaven project raised $386,104 from 4904 backers in September 2015. In a recent update, Isaac reassured backers that although the second campaign has definitely been more popular than the first, he doesn’t expect any delays:
“I have gotten a number of questions about whether to expect delays because of the increase in the number of copies I’ll need to manufacture. I would not be concerned about this, though. We are working with a very large factory. Like, very, very large. They can dedicate as much space as necessary to printing everything off in a timely manner. We are very close to being done with the proofing process, so everything is moving along according to schedule. I will let you know as soon as I see anything that could delay us.”
The second printing board game will be available for backers for $99. Other backer rewards include scenario book upgrades, solo scenario book, rule books, and four health/experience dials. Estimated delivery is for August 2017. The campaign itself is set to close on May 2nd.
