Watch: Banque de France Holds Event on the Tokenization of Finance

The Banque de France, the central bank of France, will hold an in-person event to discuss the Opportunities and Challenges of the Tokenisation of Finance, tomorrow, September 27, 2022. The event is taking place at the Musée du Louvre in Paris but it will also be live-streamed on YouTube if you are interested.

The event will open with François Villeroy de Galhau, Governor of the Banque de France as well as Mairead McGuinness, European Commissioner.

To quote the description of the gathering:

“For some years now, the payment landscape and the financial sector more broadly have witnessed the disruptive effects of digitalisation. The increasing footprint of BigTechs, the emergence of stablecoins and more recent trends such as Decentralised Finance (DeFi) have accelerated and deepened change in both the retail and wholesale markets, while raising new threats for financial stability. This roundtable will discuss whether these new risks have been sufficiently addressed and whether and how central banks and regulators should further step in to rein in this new ecosystem.”

Tokenization involves the issuance and management of assets using distributed ledger technology. These digital assets can also incorporate smart contracts that provide unique characteristics to these assets which may include digital securities.

While most observers expect all securities to evolve into digital securities, questions and risks remains as to how they should be regulated. As a major central bank in a jurisdiction that has sought to enable digital assets, it should be interesting to hear from the speakers to garner insight as to how policymakers view the emerging sector of Fintech.

The event is scheduled to start at 11:30 AM Paris time (central Europe) or 5:30 AM ET (+6 hours). The event continues throughout the day. More information is available here.
