UK-based securities crowdfunding platform Seedrs was acquired by Republic in late 2021, with the deal officially closing in late 2022. While the two platforms have cross-listed securities offerings, the combined firm has been slow to promote the ability to tap into both the European and US markets for investors – as well as issuers.
The combination of Seedrs and Republic establishes the largest investment crowdfunding firm in the world, with Seedrs reporting over £2.5 billion in investment (almost USD $3.2 billion). Republic reports over $2.5 billion in “funds deployed, so between the two, almost $6 billion in online capital formation.
This week, Republic has been promoting securities offerings for US-based accredited investors that are cross-listed on Seedrs. The offerings are as follows:
- Green Lithium – has raised £4.4 million on Seedrs so far
- Field Robotics – an Agtech firm that is nearing a launch on Seedrs
- MPower – a solar startup that over-funding on Seedrs and is now available on Republic
Republic is enabling smaller investors (accredited in the US but not in Europe) to access interesting private securities offerings in a global manner. Access to capital and investment opportunity should not be limited by geography but by the quality of the securities offering. At some point going forward, there should be a single security listing with regulation technology cooked into the process so offerings are compliant regardless of location and investor status.
As Republic is building up its Asian presence, it will be interesting to see if they extend capital formation further.
