SEC Crypto Task Force Schedules Roundtable. Will Focus on Defining Security Status

The SEC Crypto Task Force has scheduled the first of what is expected to be a series of Roundtables. The first gathering will address the topic of when a digital asset is a security and when it is something else.

The Series is labeled “Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity,” and the first session is “How We Got Here and How We Get Out – Defining Security Status.”

The past Commission, under Chairman Gary Gensler’s leadership, avoided addressing the issue, choosing to regulate by enforcement. Gensler effectively missed an opportunity to be a defining Chairman by dodging the challenge of digital assets while focusing on political issues outside the SEC’s core mission.

Commissioner Hester Peirce, who is leading the Crypto Task Force, stated:

“I am looking forward to drawing on the expertise of the public in developing a workable regulatory framework for crypto. The roundtables are an important part of our engagement with the public.”

Members of the public are encouraged to engage with the Crypto Task Force.

The first roundtable, which will be held on March 21, is open to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the SEC’s headquarters at 100 F Street, N.E., Washington, D.C.

The primary discussion will be streamed live on the SEC website. Break-out groups will follow, but they will not be available on the live stream.
